Ground Education

Our Mission

At Ground Education, the natural world is our classroom.  We teach robust lessons in elementary school gardens and green spaces that nurture every student’s academic, physical and emotional well-being.

Our Vision

We envision all elementary schools organized around thinking, exploring and learning in nature spaces.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commitment

At Ground Education, we are rooted in the belief that nature spaces are teaching spaces where we can learn to mutually thrive on the Earth we all share.  We acknowledge that systemic patterns of racism, discrimination and environmental injustice negatively impact access to land, nature and educational opportunities as well as the overall health and well-being of Black, Indigenous, People of Color and lower-income communities. We drive local change to redress these systemic problems by building welcoming gardens in Long Beach elementary schools where we facilitate robust year-round lessons for every child.  We are committed to creating natural learning environments where all students have a deep sense of belonging and know that they are seen, heard, supported and valued.  We strive to level some of the historical inequities around nature and education with inclusive spaces that meet every student’s needs in the moment.

As an organization, we are committed to a growth mindset, mutual respect, operating with integrity, working in collaboration with our stakeholders, and promoting equity.  We will strive to reflect the full diversity of identities, perspectives, backgrounds and experiences of the students and communities we serve in our board, staff, curriculum and garden design.
